Background : Hypertension is caused by several factors such as age, gender,
heredity, lifestyle. High blood pressure can cause damage to other organs in the
body. The imbalance of reactive oxygen species can be counteracted with medicinal
plants high in antioxidants, such as attarasa (Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers.). The
attarasa plant as a medicinal plant grows widely in the Balige area of North Sumatra
province.
Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of the ethanol extract of attarasa
leaves on the hematology and clinical chemistry profiles of rats induced by LNAME.
Methods: An experimental study was designed using 24 male rats. The
hypertension model was established by administering L-NAME at a dose of 25
mg/kg body weight orally for 28 days, followed by the administration of ethanol
extract of attarasa leaves at doses of 100 mg/kgBB, 300 mg/kgBB, 500 mg/kgBB,
CMC-Na 0,5% and Captopril 5 mg/kgbb for 14 days. Hematology profiles were
measured through blood samples and clinical chemistry, including kidney and liver
profiles was measured through serum and urine samples.
Results: The results showed that the administration of ethanol extract of attarasa
leaves at doses of 100 mg/kgBB, 300 mg/kBB, and 500 mg/kgBB affected blood
pressure, as evidenced by the hematology and clinical chemistry profiles of the rats.
Doses of 300 mg/kgBB and 500 mg/kgBB showed improvement compared to the
normal group, captopril 5 mg/kgBB group and Na-CMC group.
Conclusion: The study concluded that the ethanol extract of attarasa leaves has
efficacy as a cardioprotective agent that can show improve the hematology and
clinical chemistry profiles of rats after being induced with L-NAME.
