Introduction. Intracerebral hemorrhage induced secondary brain injury i.e edema and inflammation that caused irreversible brain damage. Extract propolis has been proved for strong antiinflammation and antioxidant and also effecctively protect neuron after brain injury. Purpose of this study was to explore extract propolis administration in intracerebral hemorrhage by inhibiting neuroinflammation
Methods. This was a true experimental study with post-test only control group design. Male Sprague-dawley rats weighing 250-300 grams, received intraserebral hemorrhage, extract propolis and or mannitol administation. Intracerebral hemorrhage exposure was done by injection of blood to caudate nucleus using double injection method i.e 15 μl blood in first injection then 35 μl blood as second injection after waiting for 7 minutes. Extract propolis was given 31 ul/BW orally everyday. Mannitol 20% was given 5 mL/BW/12 hour with intraperitoneal injection. Every sham positive rat experienced brain edema, aquaporin-4 expression, Sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR-1) expression, MMP-9 level, NF-κB expression, apoptosis, and worsening o f nerologic function significantly. Meanwhile, combination of extract propolis and mannitol could reduce brain edema and SUR-1 expression significantly, also improved neurologic function significantly than other groups.
Conclusion. Combination of extract propolis with mannitol had potential as treatment option in sponteneous intracerebral hemorrhage with assumption of of synergy effect as neuroprotector.
