Preliminary design of methyl chloride using hydrochlorination methanol
process from methanol and hydrogen chloride with zinc chloride as catalyst with
production capacity of 15,000 tons/year and operate for 330 days in a year. The main
process in the preliminary of this plant consists of two stages, the methyl chloride
formation stage with hydrochlorination reaction and the cooling and purification stage.
In the preliminary design of this methyl chloride, we will use a fixed bed multitube
reactor. The reactor operates at 150°C; 2 atm which requires 1226,8020 kg/hour of
methanol, 3696,7409 kg/hour of hydrochloric acid with 48,5668 kg/year of zinc
chloride catalyst. In the hydrochlorination process, the methyl chloride conversion was
98,12% and the purity was 99,99%.
The plant location is planned in Tanara District, Serang, Banten with an area of
13,334 m2. The factory's water needs come from the Cidurian River. The factory's
electricity using an electric generator with a power of 118,969 kW. The planned form
of business entity is a Limited Company (PT). The planned form of organization is a
line and staff organization with a required workforce of 127 people.
