Durian Peel Extract (Durio Zibethinus Murr.) as Renal Protector in Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) Induced 7,12-Dimetilbenz-[Α] Antracene (DMBA)
Abstract
Durian fruit peel extract (Durio zibethinus Murr.) contains bioactive compound
terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols and alkaloids. These bioactive compounds can be
chemopreventive agents to prevent cancer development, to inhibit, to neutralize
carcinogens, to improve the body's immune system, and to repair cell damage in organ
tissues exposed of carcinogens. This study aims to determine the durian skin extract
(Durio zibethinus Murr.) as a renal protector in rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by
7,12 Dimethylbenz-[A] Anthracene (DMBA). This study consists of six treatments using
a completely randomized design (CRD), which are negative control (only given feed ad
libitum); positive control (induced DMBA 10 mg/kgBW); DMBA induction +
methotrexate 9 mg/kgBW; and DMBA induction + durian peel extract at doses of 150,
300 and 450mg/kgBW. The preparation of kidney organs is made histologically by
paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining. The results of the research show
the durian peel extract does not affect kidney morphology (ex: the colour, the weight
and the volume), however it is potentially improving kidney histology (p<0.05)
including the glomerular area, the narrowing of proximal tubules and necrosis. Durian
peel extract has the potential as an effective renal protector at a dose of 450 mg/kgBW.
