Jābir Bin Ḥayyan al-Azdī is an Arabic-language animated film. In the film, subtitles were found that contradicted the concept of subtitles that must be concise, but in the film it was the opposite. This study aims to find out why the subtitles are longer than the dialogue text. This study used the theory of context of situation by Firth and Malinowski, the theory of semantic and communicative translation strategies by Newmark, and the theory of formal and dynamic translation strategies by Nida and Taber. This research is qualitative library researches using descriptive methods. The results of this study found that translator does not quite understand the concept of translation in subtitles. The reasons why translator make subtitles longer include: there is continuity between previous dialogues translated in later subtitles, translator expresses an expression with a few words in the target language, and translator hesitates to choose the right diction or word choice so as to translate it into several words. The translation strategy in this film tends to be a semantic and formal translation strategy oriented to the source language.
