dc.description.abstract | The profession of librarian can provide representation in society. The profession
of librarian also participates in shaping the image of the library in society. The
research method used in this study is the Roland Barthes’ semiotic method. The
purpose of this study is to determine the representation of libraries and librarians
in the novel Love Overdue. Data collection was done by in-depth observation of
primary sources through dialog and narration. Data analysis was done by
categorizing each dialog and narration into denotation and connotation of Roland
Barthes semiotic. The results showed that libraries are still viewed negatively,
such as represented as old and dark buildings, collections that are not renewed and
have bad odors, libraries that do not have many regular visitors, and facilities and
infrastructure that have many problems, especially in the wrong layout of library
shelves. Meanwhile, librarians are viewed positively, such as working based on
knowledge, having expertise, being responsible, and serving according to their
profession. The results of the study can be a concern for libraries and librarians to
make improvements in the five aspects studied. Therefore, libraries and librarians
can produce representations that are in line with their duties and functions in
society. | en_US |
