Abstract
Presupposition is a branch of pragmatics that discusses the initial assumptions of the speech delivered by the speaker to the interlocutor. Yule (2006:43) says that presupposition is something that is assumed by the speaker to the interlocutor as an event before the speech is produced. In understanding presupposition in addition to knowing the language used in the context of speech, it is also necessary to understand the acquisition of presupposition itself such as understanding the context of the situation, participants and shared knowledge. So that by understanding presuppositions will minimize the possibility of misunderstanding in speech events.
This study aims to analyze the presupposition by the main character contained in the drama series The Hope in episodes 1-10 using qualitative descriptive method. The theory used in this research is the theory of presupposition by George Yule and to support this theory, the author also uses the SPEAKING theory by Dell Hymes. The data used in this research is the dialog spoken by the main character in episodes 1-10.
The results of the data analysis in this study are the discovery of 30 presupposition according to George Yule spoken by the main character in episodes 1-10, namely 3 existential presupposition, 4 factual presupposition, 3 non-factual presupposition, 1 lexical presupposition, 18 structural presupposition, 1 counterfactual presupposition.
