Nursing workload is the whole work done in certain time as an amount of time and nursing done by a nurse directly and indirectly for patients, the workplace, and professional development. High workload is considered as a big threat for the quality of performance which is a person's efficiency in playing her role and responsibility related to care for patients directly. The objective of this research is to identify the correlation between workload and nurse practitioner's performance in the inpatient wards. The research uses quantitative method with descriptive correlation approach. The population is 185 nurse practitioners in the inpatient wards of RSUD Dr. Pirngadi, Medan, and 127 of them are used as the samples, taken by using simple random sampling technique. The data are analyzed by using Spearman rho correlation test. The result of the research, which uses Spearman rho correlation test, shows that p-value=0.001 and r- value=0.281 which indicate that there is the correlation between workload and nurse practitioners' performance in the inpatient wards. It means that the lower the nurses' workload is, the higher their performance. It is expected that the next researchers consider social and cultural factors which influence the perception of workload and nurses' performance so that they can provide more comprehensive and relevant description to local context.
