Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) is an amphoteric surfactant. CAPB is one of a group of surfactants with potential applications as a component of skin care cosmetics (Skin Care), shampoo and body (Shampoo and body wash). In cosmetic skin care, shampoo and body products CAPB usually exhibits low irritating potential and minimizes the irritating activity of anionic surface active ingredients. CAPB has the average formula RCONH(CH2)3N+(CH3)2CH2COO where R represents a mixture of alkyl chain lengths corresponding to those present in the fatty acids of unrefined coconut or palm oil. Usually coconut fatty acids contain a mixture of fatty acids that have 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 carbon atoms where lauric acid (C12) is the main component. CAPB is prepared via two reactions: amidation reaction and carboxymethylation reaction. In the amidation reaction, N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propylamine (DMAPA) is reacted with lauric acid to obtain amidoamine (tertiary amine). The amidation reaction requires high temperatures (150-175°C) for high conversion. The second stage is to react amidoamine (tertiary amine) with sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) to form CAPB. The pre-designed CAPB manufacturing plant is planned to produce with a capacity of 41.300 tons/year and operate for 330 days a year. The planned factory location is in the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK) which is located in Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra province. The area required is 10.116 m2. The workforce required is 145 people in the form of a Limited Liability Company (PT) under the leadership of a General Manager. The results of the economic evaluation of the Cocamidopropl Betaine Manufacturing Factory from Lauric Acid with a capacity of 41.300 Tons/Year are, Total Investment Capital = Rp. 1.095.459.914.418. Total Production Cost = Rp. 820.188.475.839. Sales Proceeds = Rp. 1.242.403.119.998. Net Profit = Rp. 280.827.738.366. Profit Margin (PM) = 32,285%. Break Even Point (BEP) = 26,831%. Return on Investment (ROI) = 25,636%. Pay Out Time (POT) = 4 years. Return on Network (RON) = 42,726%. Internal Rate of Return (IRR) = 26,49%. From the results of the economic evaluation it can be concluded that the Factory for Making Cocamidopropyl Betaine from Lauric Acid with a capacity of 41,300 Tons/Year is feasible to be establisheden_US
