This study aims to identify the factors affecting students' reading interest at SMP Negeri 35 Medan. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research approach involving the entire SMP Negeri 35 Medan student population. A sample of 90 students was selected using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique, calculated with the Slovin formula. Data were collected through direct distribution of questionnaires at the research site. The findings revealed that factors influencing students' reading interest can be categorized into internal and external factors, accounting for 56.1% and 72.1%, respectively. The combined average of these factors is 64.1%, indicating a moderate influence overall. Notably, internal factors such as attention, emotions, and motivation were lower than external factors, including the role of teachers, family environment, and school facilities. These results highlight the importance of external influences in shaping students' reading interests. This research provides valuable insights for curriculum development and serves as a foundation for future studies on reading interest among Indonesian students.
