Abstract
The role of libraries in education can significantly contribute to the delivery of high-quality education because libraries serve as one of the primary sources of knowledge. Therefore, libraries must fulfil their functions effectively to provide the necessary information for their users. This study aims to describe the role of libraries in the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) program at the UPTD Library of SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. The informants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of eight individuals: the school principal, the head librarian, library staff, the Indonesian Language Literacy Team teachers, and ninth-grade students of UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. This research is descriptive in nature with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through observation and interviews. The data analysis applied includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This study uses the theory from the School Literacy Movement (GLS) guidelines in junior high school from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) in 2016, employing research indicators that encompass three stages: habituation, development, and learning. The results of the study indicate that the library of SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar has activities that align with the GLS guidelines for junior high schools from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2016.
