Penamaan Rumah Makan Tionghoa di Kota Medan 棉兰华人饭馆的命名 (miánlán huárén fànguǎn de mìngmíng)

Abstract

Characteristics in the name of a restaurant can reflect identity and influence consumer interest in choosing a place to eat. This research aims to analyze the names of Chinese restaurants in Medan City, which focus on the form, language pattern and meaning. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data collection through observation, interview, and documentation. This study covers 40 Chinese restaurants randomly selected from several areas in Medan City that have a large Chinese population, namely Metal, Pulo Brayan, Kampung Anggrung, Asia Mega Mas, and Sekip. The findings obtained from this research show the diversity of forms, language patterns, and meanings in the naming. Based on the form of toponymy, there are eight classifications of names used, namely naming based on (1) mention of parts (2) distinctive, (3) mention of names, (4) mention of place, (5) mention of materials, (6) similarity, (7) shortening, and (8) terminology. The dominant language pattern is mixed language pattern. As for naming with a single language pattern and naming with a numeral pattern.
