Dyeing of Purun Straw Raw Materials with Natural Dyes
Abstract
Purun is one of the economically valuable wild plants that are widely used as raw material for crafts. Considering the impact caused by synthetic dyes, research is needed on natural dyes for raw materials for purun lake straw (Lepironia articulata). Ketapang leaves, angsana bark and butterfly pea flower have the potential to be used as natural dyes. The aim of this research is to compare the results of natural dyes with 3 types of raw materials in purun straws, their effect on the dimensions of purun fibers and their derivative values, their retention values, and to find out information regarding the level of people's preference for purun straws. Ketapang leaves, angsana bark and telang flowers as raw materials for natural dyes in this study were extracted using fresh extraction and boiling, resulting in 6 natural dye treatments which will be tested on the raw materials for purun danau straw in fresh and dry conditions. Hedonic testing was carried out on 45 people. The research results show that the type of purun and color formula used influence the color results obtained. Several treatment combinations showed significant interactions on fiber dimensions, runkel ratio, felting power, and purun fiber flexibility ratio. Purun fiber is relatively long and its high weaving power value shows that the use of purun by the community as a raw material for crafts is appropriate, because it will produce high quality products. The best retention is the boiled extraction butterfly pea flower color formula. Purun straw with natural coloring, which is quite popular with the public, is the color formula of freshly exctracted ketapang leaves.
