The Survey of Leaf Blight Disease (Exserohilum turcicum) on Maize (Zea mays L.) in Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency
Abstract
Maize plants are susceptible to various diseases, especially those caused by pathogenic fungi. Leaf blight caused by the pathogenic fungus Exserohilum turcicum is a disease that generally attacks plants. Leaf blight disease in maize plants generally infects maize cultivated in humid highland and midland areas. This study was aimed to determine the distribution of Leaf blight disease caused by the fungus E. turcicum at several locations in Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province. This research is an exploratory research carried out using a survey method, namely by calculating the incidence and severity of leaf blight disease on maize plants on four fields in two villages, namely Sei Glugur Village and Gunung Tinggi Village. Based on the results of observations of disease symptoms in the field and observations at the Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, the pathogen causing disease in maize plants that showed symptoms of leaf blight was identified as E. turcicum with varying incidence and severity of disease. The highest incidence of disease and severity of disease was in Sei Glugur Village Land 2 with an average percentage of incidence 83.68% and percentage of average disease severity 33.84%. Meanwhile, the lowest data was found in Gunung Tinggi Village Land 2 with an average percentage of disease incidence 33.15% and percentage of average disease severity 11.84%.
