Edamame was a commodity that focuses on exports because it has a higher economic value compared to regular soybeans. The market demand for edamame in Japan reaches 100,000 tons per year. Indonesia can only export 13.58% of Japan's demand, which is 6,790 tons of frozen fresh edamame. Efforts are needed to increase edamame production to overcome the supply shortage. One method that can be used is to improve superior edamame varieties through radiation mutation techniques. This study aims to determine the effect of gamma ray irradiation on the growth and yield of edamame plants (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). The research was conducted at Jl. Sembada, Medan Selayang District, Medan City, North Sumatra, at an altitude of ±25 meters above sea level (masl) from January to April 2024. The design used in this study was an independent sample t-test to determine the differences in edamame seeds given gamma ray irradiation doses compared to the control treatment. The results showed that gamma ray irradiation doses of 100 and 200 Gy significantly differed in terms of plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of filled pods per plant, number of empty pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, and pod weight per plant; however, there was no significant difference in terms of flowering age and harvesting age. It is recommended to evaluate different doses to determine if lower doses may have a better effect on growth and yield.en_US
