Growth Diversity and Quality Estimation of Teak Wood (Tectona grandis Linn f.) Planted Using an Agroforestry System
Abstract
Teak (Tectona grandis Linn f.) is a type of wood that is known as quality
wood, with a high level of durability and strength, and is easy to work with. Good
plant management is the best solution to meet the increasing need for teak.
Therefore, information regarding tree growth and estimating the quality of teak
wood is very important for managers to determine the cutting period and to
improve product quality and suitability of wood properties in accordance with the
needs of the developing industry in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to
analyze tree growth and estimate the quality of teak wood planted using an
agroforestry system. This research was carried out from May 2023 to Oktober
2023, in the Juhar Wargan-angin Village Community Forest, Juhar District, Karo
This research was carried out by census with a total of 120 trees at the age of 15
years. Growth characteristics were measured by measuring total height, stem
diameter, free branch height and crown diameter. Wood quality estimation was
carried out by testing the physical properties of wood on core samples, namely
moisture content, specific gravity and wood density. The results of growth
measurements in teak stands mean total height of 18.69 m, average trunk
diameter of 25.66 cm, average free branch height of 6.19 m, average crown
diameter of 5.11 m . Meanwhile, estimation the quality of teak wood has an
average water content of 108.95%, an average specific gravity of 0.40 and an
average wood density of 0.81 gr/cm3. The growth of trees and the quality of teak
wood in the Juhar Perangin-angin Village Community Forest are diverse.
