Abstract

This study aims to describe the structural shifts in translation from Chinese to Indonesian in online news texts focusing on syntactic aspects. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The main data is obtained from sentences in online news quoted from the medan china consulat website, which is available in two languages, namely Mandarin and its translation in Indonesian. The theories used in this research are the theory of translation shift pioneered by J.C Catford and syntactic structure introduced by Noam Chomsky. The results of this study show that there is a shift in syntactic structure in the sentence, namely: 27 grammatical syntactic structure shifts, 6 word to phrase shifts, 2 word class structure syntactic shifts, 1 phrase to word shift and 1 word to verb shift. These structural shifts can affect the meaning and understanding of the sentence, so it is important to pay attention to context and grammar in translation.
