dc.description.abstract | This study aims to find out the problems in speaking and the factors that affect problems in speaking faced by Grade 8 students of Ar-Rahman Islamic Junior High School at Percut Sei Tuan. This research used qualitative descriptive research method. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, and questionnaire. The researcher used three major phases of the data analysis, they were: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The researcher chose VIII A, VIII B, and VIII C as the sample which consisted of 86 students and 2 teachers of English subject. Interviews were conducted with both teachers and questionnaires were distributed and answered by the students. From the data analysis, the researcher found some conclusions of students of Grade 8 Junior High School students at Percut Sei Tuan had problems in mastering speaking skills as follows: first, the researcher found that the students’ problems in mastering speaking skills were: lack of vocabulary and mispronunciation (linguistic problems) and lack of motivation, mother tongue use, shy, nothing to say, and lack of confidence (psychological problems). Second, the factors that affect problems in speaking faced by Grade 8 students of Ar-Rahman Islamic Junior High School at Percut Sei Tuan were four factors, namely cognitive factors, affective/psychological factors, performance factors, and linguistic factors | en_US |
