dc.description.abstract | This research aimed to find the types and functions of slang used by Gen Z on TikTok. The theory used in this research is Allan and Burridge’s theory to describe the types of slang and Zhou and Fan’s theory to describe the functions of slang. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach, specifically the content analysis method. The research data studied were words and phrases from TikTok videos and comments. The data sources were several TikTok accounts belonging to Gen Z Indonesia, who were born between 1997 and 2012, had more than 10.000 followers, many video views, and last but not least, used the majority of English slang. For this research, the researcher limited the number of TikTok accounts to four as samples. The four TikTok accounts chosen by the researcher were @bigsummerb10wout, @cintakuya, @indonesianwithlauren, and @george.welly. The research result showed that there are 5 types and 3 functions of slang in 70 English slang. The five types of slang included 26 fresh and creative, 14 flippant, 6 imitative, 19 acronyms, and 5 clipping. Moreover, three functions of slang included 7 pursuit of self-identity, 45 emotive feeling, and 18 achieving politeness. | en_US |
