Cyberbullying on Instagram Social Media towards Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates of Indonesia in the 2024 Presidential Election
Abstract
This study is titled "Cyberbullying on Instagram Social Media towards Presidential
and Vice Presidential Candidates of Indonesia in the 2024 Presidential Election."
The primary objective of this research is to analyze the forms of cyberbullying that
occurred on the Instagram social media platform directed towards each
presidential and vice presidential candidate during the 2024 Presidential Election
period. The theoretical framework of this study is grounded in the concepts of new
media, social media, Instagram, and cyberbullying as proposed by Price and
Dalgleish (2010). The research methodology employed is qualitative descriptive,
utilizing Bengtsson's (2016) qualitative content analysis technique. This study
examines cyberbullying behavior on Instagram, specifically targeting users who
disseminate messages containing cyberbullying towards presidential or vicepresidential
candidates in the 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election through
comments on Instagram posts. A total of 300 comments containing cyberbullying
were analyzed to achieve data saturation. Data collection techniques included
observation and documentation. The data was gathered using the Brand24
application, a tool for monitoring public discussions on specific topics or keywords,
which assisted the researchers in selecting the most popular posts related to each
presidential and vice-presidential candidate during the period from February 1st
to March 31st, 2024. The study reveals that the forms of cyberbullying directed
towards each presidential and vice presidential candidate differed. Anies
Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto, and Gibran Rakabuming Raka experienced
cyberbullying in the forms of called name, threatened physical harm, and opinion
slammed. In contrast, Ganjar Pranowo encountered cyberbullying through called
name and opinion slammed. Muhaimin Iskandar faced cyberbullying solely through
opinion slammed, while Mahfud MD was subjected to cyberbullying involving
threatened physical harm and opinion slammed.
