The aim of this research is to compare the half-life of literature in theses from the Master’s Program in Informatics Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara and the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security journal. A quantitative approach with a descriptive-comparative method was conducted in this research. A bibliometric approach was used to provide an overview of the research subjects selected by Master's students in Informatics Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara when writing theses in the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security journal. The data collection technique used in this research is documentation. The primary data used consists of the bibliography from 17 theses with 745 citations. Secondary data was obtained from the IEEE Xplore website for the bibliography of 347 journal articles with 17,182 citations. The results of this study found that the half-life of theses from the Master's Program in Informatics Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara is 5 years, while the half- life of the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security journal is 4 years. The obsolescence rate of literature in theses from the Master's Program in Informatics Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara is 38.2%, while the obsolescence rate of literature in the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security journal is 50.8%. This indicates that the literature cited in journal articles is more up-to-date compared to theses. The half-life of the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security journal is shorter compared to the theses from the Master's Program in Informatics Engineering at Universitas Sumatera Utara.
