This research discusses the structure of interrogative sentences in Langkat Malay. It encompasses two main problems, namely the functional categories of question words and interrogative sentence structures in Langkat Malay. Functional categories of question words and interrogative sentence structures were analyzed using the X-bar theory. This study uses a qualitative approach as the data are collected in the form of words that are described. The data are collected through observation and interview. Data obtained, then, are analysed using the method of distribution and the research results are presented using formal and informal methods. The results show that question words in Langkat Malay consist of maya ‘ what ’, sapa who ’, mana where ’, kat mana
where ’, ke mana where ’, dari mana from where ’, berapa how many/much ’,
mengkala ‘ when ’, bile ‘ when ’, mac am mana ‘ how ’, and ngapa ‘ why Question words as complement (Pm) consist of maya ‘what’, sapa ‘who’, mana ‘where’, berapa ‘how many/much’, ngapa ‘why’, macam mana ‘how’, mengkala ‘when’, bile ‘when’, kat mana ‘where’, ke mana ‘where’, dari mana ‘from where’, as (Komp) complement are maya ‘what’, sapa ’who’, mana ‘where’, berapa ‘how’ and as description (Ket) are kat mana ‘where’, ke mana ‘where’, and dari mana ‘from where’. Furthermore, The interrogative sentence structure in Langkat Malay is : (C) + Spec + (I) + Comp.
