dc.description.abstractThis research discusses the form and function of expressive speech acts between teachers and students in online learning via the WhatsApp application at Methodist Vocational School 1 Aek Nabara. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subject of this research is the speech of teachers and students at Methodist Vocational School 1 Aek Nabara. The data collection technique was carried out using a proficient free-involved listening technique by collecting data on Indonesian conversations between teachers and students in online learning via the WhatsApp application, and then continued with a note-taking technique in which the researcher recorded several sentences or utterances that were the subject of the research. The data analysis technique in this research uses the pragmatic matching method, then continues with the comparison technique to equate conversational speech between the teacher and students into the form of expressive speech acts. Data was obtained from Indonesian language speech between teachers and students in online learning via the WhatsApp application. Of the 9 data collected by the researcher, the researcher found that there were 4 declarative sentences, 5 interrogative sentences, and 2 imperative sentences. Based on the data collected by the researcher, the researcher found that there was a function of the expressive speech act of congratulating as much as 2 data, the expressive speech act of saying thank you as much as 1 data, the expressive speech act of criticizing as much as 1 data, the expressive speech act of complaining as much as 1 data, the expressive speech act of being surprised as much as 1 data. , the expressive speech act of saying a compliment is 1 data, and the expressive speech act of saying an apology is 2 data.en_US
