The Effects of Leading Sectors on Labor Absorption in Medan City with Investment as A Mediating Varible
Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of the leading sector of wholesale and retail trade sector and the leading sector of construction sector on employment in Medan City and the effect of foreign investment in mediating the relationship between the leading sector and employment in Medan City from 2011 to 2020 both directly and indirectly.
The type of research used is explanatory research with a quantitive method approach. This research uses secondary data obtained in the form of time series data with a period of 10 years (2011 to 2020). The analysis model used is the Location Quotient (LQ), classical assumption test, statistical test and path analysis. The source of data collected in this study comes from Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Medan City and the investment realization report of the investment.
The results of this study indicate that the wholesale and retail trade sector and the construction sector are the leading sector in Medan City. The wholesale and retail trade sector has a positive and significant effect on employment while the construction sector has a negative and significant effect on employment. The wholesale and retail sector hasn’t significant effect on foreign investment. The construction sector has a negative and significant effect on foreign investment. Foreign investment doesn’t mediate the relationship between the wholesale and retail trade sector and employment in Medan City, but foreign investment mediates the relationship between the construction sector and employment in Medan City.
