Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a condition where blood sugar (glucose) levels in the body increase ≥ 200 due to insulin resistance. The prevalence of DM continues to increase every year, based on the latest Health Profile data for 2022, the prevalence of DM in Medan City has reached 30.22% therefore the government pays special attention to controling the disease. The DM risk factors including obesity and lack of physical activity. This research aims to determine the relationship of physical activity and obesity with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi in 2024. This research uses analytical type of research with a cross sectional study design. The samples taken were some of the elderly patients in the poly of internal medicine at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi with a sample size of 80 people. The technique that uses is accidental sampling. Univariate data was analyzed descriptively, while bivariate data used the Chi Square test. The proportion of diabetes mellitus incidence in RSUD Dr. Pirngadi was 67.5%, most of the respondents were in the age group 55 – 64 years (56.30%), with a female gender proportion of 65%, not working at 82.50%, insufficient physical activity at 86,30%, and obesity at 33.80%. The results show that there is a relationship between physical activity and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi in 2024 (p = 0.004) and there is no relationship between obesity and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly at RSUD Dr. Pirngadi in 2024 (p= 0.370). Elderly patients should maintain their lifestyle properly and appropriately, including increasing physical activity, maintaining body weight, and maintaining diet to to avoid further complications. These actions also for controlling the blood sugar levels in the body.
