Correlation between Verbal Bullying and Self-Concept in Young Teenagers at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), Yayasan Pendidikan Islam Ar-Rahman, Kota Datar
Abstract
There are a large number of cases of verbal bullying in young teenagers; such as those who speak in harsh words, insult their friends about economic background, race, religion, skin color, and physically different than others. It will affect their self-concepts such as anxiety, feeling inferiority, depression, self-withdrawn from friends, physical health complaint, deserting home, smoking, stress and getting worse in school grades, difficulty in making friends, feeling lonesome, and lack of self-confidence. The objective of the research is to identify the correlation between verbal bullying and self-concept in young teenagers at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Yayasan Pendidikan Islam Ar-Rahman, Kota Datar.
This is a quantitative research type with cross sectional approach. The samples are 92 respondents, taken by using probability sampling technique with stratified simple random sampling approach. The research result shows that p-value = 0.003 which indicates that there is a correlation between two variables with the correlation value of -.096 which indicates that the higher the students' self-concept is, the lower the bullying behavior. It is recommended that the world of education care more and pay attention to how cases of bullying can be minimized and eliminated in the world of education as it can damage the behavior of a nation's generation.
