Effect of Addition Cigarette Filter Waste Othe Characteristics of Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course Mixture
Abstract
Asphalt is the most essential material in flexible pavement construction. Modified asphalt is asphalt mixed with additives. The additives commonly used are waste materials, including cigarette filter (butt) waste. A cigarette filter is a part of a cigarette that functions as a filter. After the cigarette is finished, the cigarette butt (filter) will be thrown away because it is no longer helpful, and of course this is an environmental problem. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate, which has the same hydrocarbon elements as asphalt. They are resistant to heat and pressure and are challenging to decompose (resistant). Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of adding cigarette filter waste to the AC-WC mixture to improve the quality of the asphalt mixture and reduce waste.
The cigarette filters added to the asphalt mixture have variation levels of 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, and 9% of the planned asphalt weight. The number of test objects made was 86 test objects divided into three parts, namely Marshall Test test objects for determining the Optimum Asphalt Content (KAO) as many as 39 test objects, Marshall Test test objects using KAO with the addition of cigarette filter waste as many as 45 test objects, and test objects for testing Wheel Tracking Machine (WTM) as many as 2 test objects. A wet system was used to mix asphalt and cigarette filter waste. The tests carried out were Marshall testing, Extraction testing as a control of asphalt content, and WTM testing.
The study results show that the addition of cigarette filter waste to the asphalt mixture affects the properties of the asphalt, namely an increase in the softening point value and specific gravity and a decrease in the asphalt penetration value. It also affects the Marshall parameter values by increasing the stability, VFA, and MQ values. The highest stability value was obtained with a figure of 1231 kg with an additional cigarette filter waste content of 7%. From the results of the WTM test, there was also an increase in the dynamic stability value, which indicates that the mixture is resistant to rutting.
