Abstract
Over time, traditional tools will be replaced by modern tools because modern tools have much better quality, are more economical and more functional than traditional tools. However, the current phenomenon is reversed compared to the community, especially in Padang Genting Village, Talawi District, Batubara Regency, which still uses traditional looms because, according to the logic of modernization above, traditional looms should have been abandoned by the craftsmen because they still use human power. Culturally, this phenomenon is interesting to question, regarding the reasons for the use of traditional looms in the midst of the current popularity of the clothing industry.
This research method used is a qualitative research method or naturalistic research method because all research is carried out naturally or without being engineered (natural setting). As studied in the ethnographic method, this method has the aim of revealing the socio-cultural meaning that exists in society, studying a way to enter into the daily life patterns and groups of society.
The research results show that Traditional Weaving Tools are a form of equipment that is capable of making or producing woven cloth. This traditional loom requires skill and patience in controlling thread tension and moving the loom by hand. To overcome low production/productivity is to improve the quality of songket weaving production, if there is business capital assistance, there is assistance to promote the craftsmen's songket weaving products. Other strategies used by entrepreneurs to ensure their business continues to produce are offering low prices but still not making a loss, reducing employees and trying to vary the colors of threads and types of threads used for weaving, the songket woven motifs produced so that they are attractive to buyers. The way to deal with damage to traditional looms is usually to replace damaged components with new wooden components.
Maintaining traditional looms aims to produce the best or best songket so that it can provide benefits in the form of production profits that will continue to develop over time and become an identity in using songket, especially the Malay people who consider songket as their culture and generally foreigners who like the uniqueness of songket.
