The Meaning of the Mamongoti Bagas (Entering a New House) Tradition Symbol for the Toba Batak Diaspora in Cikampak Village, South Labuhan Batu
Abstract
With the development of migration activities, the Toba Batak diaspora often
faces challenges in maintaining and continuing their cultural heritage in a different
environment. They may experience changes in the way they view and perform
traditions, as they must adapt to the different values and social norms of the new
environment they encounter. This study was conducted in Cikampak, South Labuhan
Batu Regency, North Sumatra Province, and used qualitative methods with a
descriptive approach. Then analyze data through steps such as summarizing the data
presenting the data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the Batak toba
diaspora interpreted the ceremony of entering a new house as asking for prayers to be
healthy. Each phase of the implementation has a certain meaning. For example,
worship, ribbon cutting, giving ulos, sipir ni tondi rice, and goldfish are examples. The
ceremony also has taboos that must be followed. For example, you cannot leave the
house for seven days and it is forbidden to remove cement from the building. The Toba
Batak diaspora in Cikampak give special meaning to the Mamongoti Bagas ceremony
as a way to honor the traditions and preserving cultural identity. Toba Batak migrants
maintain the essence and values of this ceremony by maintaining the meaning and
purpose of its implementation through deep knowledge and understanding of their
home region.
