dc.description.abstract | This research examines the Gothic elements contained in the novel The Death of
Jane Lawrence written by Caitlin Straling. The purpose of this study is to identify
Gothic elements are found in the novel The Death of Jane Lawrence written by
Caitlin Straling. This study uses a qualitative research method of content analysis
to find out the intrinsic elements. The concept used in this research is Gothic
elements that proposed by Robert Harris in identifying the Gothic elements
contained in the novel The Death of Jane Lawrence written by Caitlin Straling. The
data contained in this study are taken from words, dialogs, phrases, and sentences
of the two main characters in the novel The Death of Jane Lawrence written by
Caitlin Straling. The results of this study show that there are nine elements out of
eleven Gothic elements found in the novel The Death of Jane Lawrence, namely
supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events, omens, portents, visions, women in
distress, high, even overwrought emotions, setting in a castle or old mansion,
metonymy of gloom and horror, an atmosphere of mystery and suspense,
vocabulary of gothic, and hyperbolic phrases. The nine Gothic elements are applied
in two inrinsic elements, namely character and setting. | en_US |
