Critical Discourse Analysis on Accident News in Sindonews.Com Online Media
Abstract
Online media often highlights news of accidents that grab people's attention and trigger sympathy and empathy. It also serves as a reminder to be more careful. However, excessive coverage can lead to fear and anxiety. Therefore, the media must be responsible in presenting accident news in a balanced manner and pay attention to its impact on society. This study aims to describe three dimensions, namely text, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices in the reporting of accidents in the online media sindonews.com. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study are news about accidents on sindonews.com online media. The research data source is accident news from sindonews.com, with the news studied published between September 2023 and December 2023. The data collection techniques used in this study were free listening and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using Norman Fairclough's discourse analysis model which consists of three dimensions: text dimensions, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices. The results of the study can be concluded that in terms of the text dimension, the accident news discourse text on sindonews.com displays a complete representation with vocabulary, diction, sentences, and coherent language, and includes participants. In terms of relations and identity, journalists are neutral towards sources and media, and do not corner certain parties. Then, in terms of the dimensions of discourse practice, sindonews.com presents accident news according to 5W + 1H journalistic rules by interviewing relevant sources. The headline and news content are consistent, providing information that is suitable for public consumption. In the analysis of sociocultural practices, sindonews.com functions not only as a conveyor of information, but also reflects broader sociocultural dynamics. The relationship between the situation of events, the role of institutions, and social responses shape public discourse.
