Japan is a developed country, especially in the fields of technology and economics,
with mass media playing a large role in its society. Anime and manga are a key part
of Japanese popular visual culture and have also played an important role in shaping
the global mediascape. The anime Tokyo Godfathers, by Satoshi Kon, is an anime
that raises the social issue of homelessness and can shape the global mediascape or
provide viewers with a view of homeless life in Japan. This research aims to analyze
the lives of homeless people and the views of Indonesian people in Japan towards
homeless people in the anime Tokyo Godfathers. This research uses a descriptive
qualitative method, with note-taking and survey data collection techniques, namely by
watching the anime Tokyo Godfathers, then analyzing conversation scenes and
distributing questionnaires to several Indonesian people in Japan as respondents.
The theories used to analyze the data are literary sociology theory and representation
theory. Literary sociology theory is used to analyze literary works in the form of
anime, namely the anime Tokyo Godfathers and representation theory is used to
understand respondents' views on homeless people in the anime Tokyo Godfathers.
The results of this research show that the anime Tokyo Godfathers depicts the life of
homeless people in Japan, such as housing, health, how to survive, and the stigma
attached to homelessness. The anime Tokyo Godfathers can also shape and change
