    Abstract
The head nurse plays a crucial role in the planning function, which is the foundation of overall management functions as it determines the direction an organization aims to achieve. An important aspect of the head nurse's planning function is facilitating communication in nursing care. This communication is implemented through handover activities, pre-conference, post-conference, and nursing rounds. The assessment was conducted through observation and interviews. The analysis of handover revealed that the predominant method used is traditional. Bedside handover is only performed in the morning shift and not during the evening or night shifts to save time and avoid disturbing patients. Regarding the handover procedure, it was found that the head nurse does not prepare a handover report format because it is already available in the computer system (SIMRS) using the SBAR technique. The head nurse's planning functions in handover include initiating and leading the handover, communicating information during the handover, organizing and scheduling the handover, developing standard operating procedures (SOP) for handover, encouraging and directing handover activities, evaluating the handover process, and closing the handover. The analysis of the pre-post conference procedures showed that the preconference implementation is suboptimal, and the post-conference is not conducted at all. The head nurse does not take an active role in conducting prepost conferences. Based on further interviews, it was found that the head nurse does not contribute to the pre-post conference and delegates the entire responsibility to the primary nurse or team leader.
