Preschool children are a sensitive period who easily receive stimuli from their
environment, both intentional and unintentional. Children's growth and development
are greatly influenced by stimulation. There are many aspects of development in
preschool children, one of which is cognitive development. Playing can be a good
therapeutic medium for children to develop their own creative potential. Play therapy
is an evidence-based intervention approach that is effective for children with a
variety of presenting problems. The purpose of writing this senior practical report is
to carry out nursing care by applying play therapy to develop cognitive abilities in
pre-school children at the Agape Terehasan Orphanage in Medan. Nursing care was
provided to 2 children aged 3-6 years. After carrying out nursing care, the results
showed that the child was happy, active and gained new knowledge from play therapy.
Caregivers as substitutes for parents in orphanages are advised to continue to carry
out play therapy with preschool age children in order to improve the development of
children's cognitive abilities.
