dc.description.abstract | This research is entitled Reading Corner Activities by the Medan Reading
Community and Reading Literacy of the Medan City Community. The purpose of
this study is to find out the activities of the Reading Corner in improving the
reading literacy of the community in the city of Medan as well as the supporting
and inhibiting factors of the Reading Corner in improving the reading literacy of
the community in the city of Medan. This study uses a qualitative approach of
descriptive methods. The data collection technique was carried out by in-depth
interviews and observations. The informants in this study totaled seven people
selected based on the criteria that had been set by the researcher. The results of
this study show that the efforts of the Reading Corner in improving community
reading literacy are as a facilitator in providing reading books, providing literacy
activities, and literacy learning for the community. Administrators and volunteers
as motivators who provide services to encourage the community to be able to
improve reading literacy. This Reading Corner not only holds a feather stall for
the community, but all literacy activities in the Medan Reading Community are
also given to the community now directly by learning together. In addition, the
Medan Reading Community through literacy activities seeks to provide benefits
for the community to expand knowledge through literacy activity programs which
are expected to increase reading literacy understanding. This is in line with the
vision and mission of the Medan Reading Community. The supporting factors of
the Reading Corner in improving people's reading literacy are, the existence of
reading books, interesting literacy games, literacy learning presented by each
mentor, active administrators so that the Reading Corner continues to run, social
media as a support in campaigning for Reading Corner activities where online
news media like to cover Reading Corner activities, invited to radio shows, In
addition, other supporting factors are the standard location, as well as the
willingness and proficiency of the community in understanding and receiving
information. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors of the Reading Corner in
improving people's reading literacy are, human resources in this case are still
hampered by volunteers who participate voluntarily to provide knowledge and
energy in carrying out literacy activities, weather because the Reading Corner is
carried out in open spaces, city facilities that are still not supportive in literacy
