Social Problems in The Film Penyalin Cahaya: A Comparison of Social Representations of Foreign Students (Malaysia) and Local Students at The University of North Sumatera
Abstract
Movies not only reflect social realities, but can also have an impact on viewers and society at large. In this analysis, we can see how representation in films can influence people's perceptions of various groups and social issues. This research aims to see a comparison of the representations of foreign students and local students at the University of Sumatra regarding social problems in the film Penyalin Cahaya. This research uses representation theory with quantitative research methods. The number of respondents to this research was 60 people with the criteria being 30 respondents being foreign students of science and technology and 30 respondents being local students of social sciences. The data collection technique is carried out through a questionnaire whose validity and reliability have been tested. The results of the questionnaire data processed using ANOVA and tests show that there is significance to the indicators of social problems shown in the film, especially in terms of the representation of poverty and problems of the younger generation. This can be seen from the indicator value <0.05 (significant) so that the hypothesis accepted in this research is the working hypothesis (H1), namely that there is a difference in the representation of foreign students and local students in understanding social problems in films. The findings in the research revealed that foreign students were less aware of the power and class relations in the film. This could happen because Malaysian people tend to identify themselves based on ethnicity rather than a particular social class. So that racial consciousness or racial ideology is more dominant and hinders the development of class consciousness. This is different from local students who are more aware of the existence of social classes in films. Apart from these findings, another result was found, namely that the majority of foreign students believed that drinking parties were permissible as long as they were in the right place and of legal age. This can be influenced by legal regulations in Malaysia regarding liquor, where liquor in Malaysia can only be consumed by certain groups. This is different from the findings of local students with more varied answers such as prohibiting, allowing as long as they comply with the rules and considering this as a reward for achievement. In this research, representation theory is relevant to the research results, which are social representations in forming students' collective views on social problems presented in movies.
