Populism of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Policies on “War on Drugs” in The Philippines
Abstract
This thesis analyzes and describes President Rodrigo Duterte's policies in combating drug crimes in the Philippines, known as Oplan Tokhang. Through a populist approach, Duterte garnered widespread public support by promising to reduce drug-related crimes through aggressive measures. These policies have sparked controversy both domestically and internationally, particularly regarding alleged human rights violations due to the practice of extrajudicial killings.
The thesis aims to analyze the impact of Duterte's policies on Philippine society, the international response, and to highlight the populist perspective within Duterte's administration. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection through literature review and content analysis. The findings show that Duterte's policies significantly reduced drug-related crimes but caused negative social consequences and drew international condemnation over alleged human rights abuses.
