dc.description.abstractOne of the pathogenic bacteria that cause periodontal disease is Porphyromonas gingivalis. Scaling root planing is a common procedure to remove periodontal pathogens, but this procedure has limitations so that it cannot always remove all pathogenic bacteria. Antibacterial treatment is needed as a supporting therapy to improve periodontal treatment results. Chitosan oligosaccharide is one of the natural ingredients known to have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of chitosan oligosaccharide gel in inhibiting the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The type of research used was laboratory experimental research with a post-test-only control group design. The research sample used was Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria, which were then incubated and cultured on Brucella Agar Sheep Blood 5%. This study was tested using the Kirby-Bauer method with a repetition of four times with the same treatment in each group based on their respective concentrations. The results showed that chitosan oligosaccharide gel with concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, and 20% had strong inhibitory activity against the growth of P. gingivalis bacteria, with an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 10.50 mm, 14.00 mm, and 17.44 mm. Chitosan oligosaccharide gel with a concentration of 25% has a very strong inhibitory activity with an average inhibition zone diameter of 20.81 mm. In chitosan oligosaccharide gel with concentrations of 1.5% and 3%, there was no inhibitory activity. The conclusion of this study is that chitosan oligosaccharide gel with a concentration of 25% is effective in inhibiting the growth of P. gingivalis bacteria with very strong inhibition.en_US
