Analysis of (Ḥurūfu Al ‘Aṭfi/Conjunction Letters) in Surah Al-Kahfi
Abstract
This study analyzes the conjunction letters ('Aṭaf) in Surah Al-Kahfi. The research aims to identify the number of conjunction letters and their meanings in Surah Al-Kahfi. It applies the theory from the books Alfiyah Ibn Malik, along with supporting theories from the book Rules of Grammar and Examples of Parsing and the book Matan Al-Ajrumiyah. This is a library research study utilizing a descriptive method, carried out through the listening method and note-taking technique. Data collection involved reading Surah Al-Kahfi, observing the conjunction letters ('Aṭaf) within the Surah, and recording them. The results of the research reveal that there are 135 conjunction letters in Surah Al-Kahfi, which consist of: 94 instances of the conjunction الواو (al-wāwu),31 instances of الفاء (fa`), 5 instances of ثم (ṡumma), and 5 instances of أو (’aw).These conjunction letters convey meanings such as: Performing actions simultaneously,Performing actions subsequently within a short time,Performing actions sequentially over a longer time, and Providing two choices, where one may be selected. The conclusion derived from this study is that Surah Al-Kahfi contains a significant number of conjunctions, namely الواو (al-wāwu), الفاء (fa'), ثم (ṡumma), and أو (’aw). However, the study did not find the presence of the following conjunctions: ام (am), بل (bal), لا (la), لكن (lakin), and حتى (ḥatta)*.
