Vihara Avalokitesvara di Kecamatan Siantar Selatan Kota Pematang Siantar (1980-2008)

Abstract

This study examines the history of Vihara Avalokitesvara in Siantar Selatan Subdistrict, Pematang Siantar City. The objective of this research is to explain the process of the establishment of Vihara Avalokitesvara, which initially consisted of a small building and later developed into a large complex that became a popular destination for the public from 1980 to 2008. This study employs a historical method, which involves topic selection, heuristics, critique, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicate that Vihara Avalokitesvara is not only a place of worship for Buddhists but also includes facilities such as a medical clinic, the Avalokitesvara Foundation School, and the Dewi Kwan Im Statue. Each building within the Vihara Avalokitesvara complex holds significant meaning for the Buddhist community. The study concludes that the establishment of Vihara Avalokitesvara does not hinder religious tolerance in the surrounding community. Indirectly, the presence of Vihara Avalokitesvara also contributes to the enhancement of tourist attractions in Pematang Siantar City.
