Women's Dilemma as Guardians of Family Food Security (Study of Women Working in the Sukaria Kitchen) MSE in Karang Berombak Village
Abstract
Family food security is an important pillar in achieving social welfare, especially among low-income communities. This research aims to analyze the role of women in strengthening family food security through their participation in the Dapur Sukaria micro, small and medium enterprise (UMK) in Karang Berombak Village, West Medan District. Using a qualitative approach, this research explores how social structures and gender norms influence women's experiences in carrying out dual roles as breadwinners and household managers. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with various informants, including MSE owners and female workers. The research results show that women involved in the Dapur Sukaria UMK not only contribute to the family economy but also play a key role in ensuring household food security. However, this dual role reveals their power dynamics and norms for negotiating work demands and domestic responsibilities. This research reveals that MSEs can be a safety valve by empowering women and changing rigid gender norms. However, the double burden faced by women remains a challenge that affects their quality of life and the stability of family food security. Therefore, structural support from the government and society is needed to reduce this burden and create fairer conditions for women in society.
