dc.description.abstractIntroduction. Dry eye disease is a multifactorial eye disease that can interfere with daily activity. One of the factor that cause this disease is the high usage of screened electronic device also known as gadget. The usage of gadget is particularly high amongst students for its convenience as a device for education, communication, and other use. This usage is increased because of the recent global pandemic of covid-19, thus increasing its likelihood to cause dry eye disease. Objective. To find out the if there is truly a correlation between the pattern in which gadgets are used and dry eye disease of the 5th and 7th semester students from faculty of medicine USU. Method. A questionnaire is randomly distributed to the class of 2020 and 2021. The questionnaire in question contains the SPEED questionnaire and questions about the answerer’s gadget habitual use. These data then be calculated through the chi-square method to find out the truth of its correlation. Result and Discussion. The whole population sample suffers from dry eye, with the mild case accounting for 12% of the population sample, 25% for moderate and 63% for the severe ones. The majority of respondents (61%) use gadgets for >6 hours a day and the rest (39%) ≤6 hours. Unfortunately, there aren’t any respondent that follow the 20-20-20 rule. A chi square test is performed to determine the correlation between the severity of dry eye disease and gadget usage. From the test it is calculated that the p value is 0,342. Conclusion. There aren’t any significant correlation between gadget usage pattern and dry eye disease.en_US
