dc.description.abstractRice paddies are very important lands in Indonesia as they are a primary natural resource for rice production. One of the issues in rice paddy cultivation in Medan City, North Sumatra, is soil pollution caused by the increasingly expanding industrial areas. The objective of this study is to determine the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) content in both rice paddy soil and rice in Medan City. This study was conducted using a descriptive method through a field survey approach with random sampling. The sampling locations for the study were in 9 sub-districts of Medan City, North Sumatra, with 30 soil samples collected to represent each sub-district. The sample tests were conducted at the PT. Socfin Indonesia Laboratory in Medan. The research data were analyzed using linear regression equations. The results of this study indicate the presence of cadmium heavy metal content in paddy soil in Medan city, ranging from 2.35 – 5.38 mg/kg, with the highest soil Cd content of 5.38 mg/kg found in Kel. Besar, Kec. Labuhan, which is classified as very high because it exceeds the threshold set by the Ministry of State for Population and Environment of Indonesia and Dalhousie University, Canada. Meanwhile, the cadmium content in rice in Medan city ranges from 4.26 – 10.82 mg/kg, with the highest rice Cd content of 10.82 mg/kg found in Kel. Tangkahan, Kec. Labuhan, which is classified as very high because it exceeds the threshold set by the National Standardization Agency. Soil Cd has the potential to affect rice Cd content by 40%.en_US
