Effectiveness of Paritta Da Bei Zhou Meditation on Reducing Anxiety of Cancer Patients at Staya Bhumi Metta Monastery
Abstract
Cancer is a disease that not only affects the body, but also the psyche and anxiety are often an additional burden that can make the treatment journey harder. In Buddhism, Paritta Da Bei Zhou meditation which is believed to be able to relieve anxiety with a calming effect and increase inner calm. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Paritta Da Bei Zhou meditation in reducing cancer patients' anxiety. This research design used quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest approach in one intervention group with a total sample of 20 Buddhists whom live in Medan city. Data collection techniques with convinience sampling, anxiety instrument measured using Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and Wilcoxon test used for statistical tests in this study. The results showed a decrease in the anxiety level of cancer patients with an average value of anxiety before being given the intervention was 50.9 to 44.4 after being given the intervention, obtained a p-value of 0.001. It can be concluded that Paritta Da Bei Zhou meditation is effective in cancer patients. This research is expect to be use as a complementary therapy in reducing anxiety and during the treatment programs.
